I fell back in and found myself today
I’d been away
The ended books, the clothes stuffed out on shelves
The scent of stains
A painting in the rain
A violin case broken and in pain
A sob of day
And something fainter tapping out in red
But mostly grey
And all in wide, dull chorus, scattering some little name
So much of quite the same
And, fleetingly, a brushing mouth pinned up with blame
And almost vain
And under me, a bed
And over me a jolt of cobwebs
And my flippant nods and footsteps taken drained
The beached remains
More footsteps in the folding light
So very strange
If not entire
There was somewhere to walk
Led out beyond the gnashing street-glares
And the tamest ravages of morning drains
And still inane and somewhere
And still a fallow dash across to sane
The pyres flared to nothing
And a pair of soft, wet legs crumpled
And bent down, maimed
Then just a beach far off into the light
The plummeting of gulls
A hymn beyond all sound or hope of sight
The tinkle of sharp madness ground in night
And the brief blasts of a block of fleeing trains
The salt-water and the harder tastes exchanged
A drum beat burst behind two eyelids
Spelling out the losses of this whispered game
More than empty yet
Lesser than could be full, or even brave
I stayed
And the mercy of the bedclothes gripping
And the rest will fade
Even if I could never know the song I played
Back between odd squat walls
And ill-slung canvasses stuck into flat black frames
And too late
Too late to pull the pieces out again
A humbled shame
A shallow rise
Sticking the skin back on again
Merging the moist ashes of the mourning day
It’s better that way
It just has to be better
In that way
The rest is nature redefined
Refined alone
Otherwise, blind
Bonded in stone
Dropping away
Dropping away in kind
Dropping away
Dropping away in time
Dropping away
Dropping away in kind
Dropping away
Dropping away in time
Dropping away
Dropping away in kind
Dropping away
Dropping away in time
