Feigned Residue
Ice on your dashboard, silent as the room,
More piles of silence blocked up behind doors,
The streets just stirring, dog-eared days resumed,
Another stretch of sad moves underscored.
Some panic at the coast, a new official's valued sneer,
Recycling boxes laden with sealed paints and greetings cards,
Communications dropping in the dusk a little way from here,
Scrapped memories carried off to fill a hole in someone else's yard.
Sparse mouse-clicks under discrete hands,
Desultory exhales, mute tongues agnate,
The TV's intimate city served perpetual, all staple import thieves,
More rovers' upscale trespasses,
And regiment modern advocates,
Heavy emptiness breaks in hydraulic jumps,
And each outline that was us grieves.
These misfit silhouettes in dressing gowns,
Turned and severed to respective cavity booths,
The cool machinery isolate, locked out,
And now perfunctory sleep,
Switched off on your side, lightless, energy costs reduced,
I'll stay awake a while perhaps, and weep.
Another graft of years on a bleeding burn,
Slim green miles of sunshine and silly grins and the latest dolls,
Woundings not unfamiliar, mistakes so much unlearned,
What was it for, at this or any time near equal appal?
What was it for at all?
What was it for at this or any time?
What was it for at all?
